Today I’m continuing the tour of our house, we’re visiting the downstairs bath. As part of Metamorphosis Monday I should have before photos; I’ve searched to no avail. I hope a description will suffice. Our house was built in 1798, at a time indoor plumbing was not an option. In the early 1950’s a previous owner partitioned off nine feet of a twenty eight foot room creating space for a bathroom. By the time we bought the house the old fixtures had been removed, all that remained were a small sink base and toilet. There were masonite panels on the lower walls and cheap linoleum on the floor. Now let’s take a look at Hubby’s hard work……
The chair rail on the outside walls is original, Hubby duplicated it on the remaining walls and added bead board below. We found a claw foot tub through a newspaper ad…..
The antique chimney cupboard serves as our medicine cabinet and linen closet……
a handy display place for some white pitchers too…….
Hubby made the vanity out of old barn wood, with a soap stone top and a “vessel sink”……
The sink was actually a bowl I found on eBay, I loved the embossed pansies and just had to have it. Because it’s a bowl, the shape of the bottom doesn’t allow for complete drainage. It’s a little used powder room, the sink is cute – isn’t that what counts?
I found the mirror frame, unfinished, in the back corner of an antique store – it was $15. I applied two coats of tung oil, Hubby put the mirror in…..
We have chests throughout the house that we use for storage, this one holds Christmas pillows and fills an otherwise empty space…..
I bought a yard of this fabric knowing some day I’d find a place for it, I love it ….
The pink and red rose stencil on the floor is my labor contribution, traditionally I point and watch…..
A few last touches, my fairy princess, sconces from eBay, and a tea pot vanity lamp. Sure beats the old privy.
Visit our hostess, Susan, at Between Naps on the Porch to see all the Met Monday participants.
Thank you for stopping by, I hope to see you for Outdoor Wednesday.
