We’re continuing the house tour, let’s visit the den this week. I’m unable to locate a photo of the original tragic state of this room, imagine numerous layers of paint over numerous layers of wallpaper and mustard gold trim. We won’t even discuss the carpet. The fireplace was sealed, mantle gone.
This was the room in the middle of the initial redo, I can tell the room was a work in progress because there are no pictures on the walls and we never have bare walls…..the room was not this blue, scanner issues……
We removed the carpet and refinished the original heart pine floors. The walls are a sage green, it’s such a relaxing color…..
The room that I use for an office is painted in this same color, but with much more feminine furnishings, This room is the den where Hubby and I spend our down time…..
I have photos of the sons and grands positioned so I see them when I’m sitting on the sofa…..
Both the Life magazine and the newspaper were printed on the day Hubby was born, he loves that kind of thing…..
Hubby duplicated the mantel in the living room, the only original mantel in the downstairs. If you visited last week, you saw the bathroom. The den is the room that was divided to create a bathroom; which is why the fireplace is now in the corner…..
Our fireplace has an abnormally tall opening and in an effort to protect the rug from flying embers, Hubby made a fireplace screen from an old iron garden gate. The hinges are still intact allowing the gate to swing open.
The antique reclining chair beside the TV cabinet was Hubby’s first recliner….it didn’t last long. I would be in tears from laughter every time he would walk to the back and adjust the bar to recline….bad wife.
and a game table for rounds of back gammon when the sons are home…..
We use trunks for storage all over the house. Another thing missing in an old home, closets….
Mimi says
Your den is so warm and inviting; it would be hard to leave once in there. Love the old trunks…you are so right about old houses not having closets and the ones there are so tiny! I am always looking for storage ideas. I have lots of old picnic baskets stacked that I use for small things.
